Which Type of Gift Wrapper Are You? (And How to Wrap Beautifully, Whatever Your Style)"

5 Types of Gift Wrappers: Which One Are You?

Whether you’ve been counting down to wrapping season since the start of October or you’re surrounded by paper, tape, and mild regret on Christmas Eve, we’ve all got our own wrapping style.

At Mac & Lilly, we’ve learned a few things about how to wrap beautifully (mostly through trial, error, and getting tape stuck to our elbows). So, whichever kind of wrapper you are, we’ve got Christmas gift wrapping tips to help your gifts look gorgeous and stay stress-free.

The Effortlessly Elegant Wrapper

You love a crisp fold, matching ribbon, and perfect corners. Your wrapping paper probably coordinates with your tree, living room, and the dog’s Christmas outfit, and honestly, we’re impressed and in awe of you.

Tips for the Elegant Wrapper:

• Cut your paper to size first, it should overlap by about 3cm for a neat seam and to avoid bulky edges.
• Use double-sided tape so everything looks seamless and perfectly finished.
• Fold the edges of your paper inwards before taping, it gives that clean, boutique look.
• When tying bows, cut ribbon at a diagonal to stop fraying and add a touch of style.
• Stick to one wrapping paper design and match your ribbon and tags, it creates a calm, coordinated look under the tree. https://macandlilly.com/collections/gift-wrapping

The Eco Gift Wrapper

You prefer gifts wrapped with care, conscience, and maybe a sprig of rosemary. Your wrapping looks charmingly natural, and it smells good too.

Tips for Earth-Friendly Wrapping:

• Choose recycled or recyclable kraft paper, it’s strong, simple, and beautiful.
• Tie with jute, hessian, or cotton string instead of ribbon for sustainable gift wrap
• Add foliage, dried flowers, fruit or herbs  they look lovely and can be composted after.
• Use stamps to decorate your paper, initials, stars, holly, even little dogs (you can never have too many).
• Finish with a plantable tag or a handwritten note on blotting paper for that vintage, heartfelt touch.

The Bag Believer

You’ve mastered the art of the bag. Fast, fabulous, and reusable, we salute you.

Tips for Gift Bag Greatness:

• Pop in some tissue paper in a matching tone to your bag,  it fills space and adds texture.
• Tie a ribbon around the handles or attach a tag with a short message.
• Mix and match plain and patterned bags, just keep them within one colour family for balance.
• Reuse favourite bags from year to year, it’s kind to your wallet and the planet.

The Crafty Creator

You see wrapping as an art form. You’ve got ribbons, twine, and maybe a hot glue gun nearby. Every gift is unique, and that’s your magic.

Tips for Creative Wrappers:

• Layer different textures, matte paper with glossy ribbon, or kraft with velvet.
• Try stamping or embossing the recipient’s initials for a personal touch.
• Mix patterned and plain papers in similar colours, it feels intentional, not chaotic.
• Add a handwritten note on torn blotting paper for that soft, vintage finish.

♡ The Fast, Festive & “That’ll Do Nicely” Wrapper

You’ve got a long list, a short amount of time, and possibly a roll of paper that’s seen better days. Corners? Optional. Tape? Everywhere. But the gifts are wrapped, names are written straight on the paper, and the job’s done, and that’s something to be proud of.

Mac & Lilly tips:
• Choose one roll of paper for everyone, it saves time and still looks coordinated under the tree.
• Keep your scissors, tape, ribbon, and tags in one basket so you’re not hunting mid-wrap.
• Use gift bags for awkward shapes, they’re your festive secret weapon.
• Go for thicker paper that won’t tear as easily when you’re in a hurry.

You might not be folding like a pro, but you’re wrapping with love (and possibly mince pie crumbs). That’s what truly counts.

♡ Wrapping It All Up

Whether you’re wrapping for family, friends, the dog groomer, or that colleague whose name you’ve definitely spelt wrong, every gift you wrap is a tiny act of kindness. Every parcel (even the slightly wonky ones) says, “I tried, and I care.” And honestly, that’s what Christmas wrapping is all about.

We love that everyone has their own way of wrapping, polished, rustic, or delightfully last-minute. It’s all part of the fun.

And if you’d rather leave the wrapping to us, we do offer a premium gift wrap service, with beautifully coordinated paper, ribbon and tags, and the option to send your gift straight to the recipient.

We hope this little guide has helped in some small way, or at least amused you and helped you pinpoint which type of wrapper you are.

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably been every type at some point in life
